SCIATICA BASICS
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a symptom—not the underlying problem. It describes pain or altered sensation that often travels from the lower back or buttock into one leg. Symptoms occur when the SCIATIC NERVE becomes irritated or compressed, often because of a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome. While at-home stretches may help reduce symptoms for some people, lasting relief begins with identifying what’s causing the nerve irritation.

UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSE
Why sciatica happens
Sciatic pain may come from pressure on a lumbar nerve or on the sciatic nerve itself. Symptoms often develop gradually rather than after one specific injury. Prolonged sitting, a prior injury that never fully resolved, poor posture, and strained body mechanics may all contribute.
Underlying causes of sciatica symptoms include:
- Pinched lumbar nerve due to misalignment in the spine or pelvis.
- Pressure on lumbar nerves from disc degeneration, bulging, or herniation.
- Pressure on the sciatic nerve from tight muscles such as the piriformis or nearby muscles.

Common questions
Sciatica chiropractic FAQs
Sciatica is pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that can travel from the lower back or buttock into a leg. It describes a symptom pattern, not a single diagnosis. An exam helps identify what may be irritating the nerve.
Gentle walking may help some people stay mobile, but it should not sharply increase leg pain, numbness, or weakness. Start with a comfortable distance and adjust based on your symptoms. We can help you decide which activities make sense after an exam.
It may help some people, depending on the cause of their symptoms. Dr. Wiese examines your back and leg findings first, then explains whether chiropractic care, exercises, spinal decompression, or medical evaluation is the right next step.
Spinal decompression may be an option for selected people whose sciatica is linked to a disc problem. It is not appropriate for every cause of leg pain. We discuss it only after reviewing your history, exam findings, and any imaging that is needed.
Seek urgent medical care for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the groin, or sudden or worsening leg weakness. Severe symptoms after an injury also need prompt medical attention. See Mayo Clinic’s guidance.
Some stretches can help, but the right movement depends on what is causing your symptoms. The sciatica guide demonstrates press-ups, hamstring stretches, and piriformis stretches. Stop a stretch if it increases pain traveling down your leg.
