Heron Haven Nature Center

Heron Haven Nature Center is a place of interest for many in Omaha, NE. The center itself was established in 1996 to provide opportunities for visitors to explore and learn about the natural world and experience hands-on science education. It has been home to various plants and animals, including local species such as turtles, frogs, snakes, and more.

About Heron Haven Nature Center

The nature center has been home to thousands of visitors over the years. We are excited to open our doors again. We have had many offers for field trips, adult education classes, and more, so we wanted to make sure that everything was ready.

Keeping up with their goal of providing opportunities for visitors to explore and learn about the natural world, the staff at Heron Haven Nature Center is hosting a variety of wildlife day camps through June 26th (the camps run Monday through Friday each week). The camps will explore different habitats in Michigan, including woodland, farmland/prairie, and wetland areas. Activities include animal tracking, pond ecology, plants identification, and much more.

Established in 1996, this wildlife refuge and nature center offers a variety of educational, recreational, and environmental programs. The facility is also open to the public for self-guided tours and features an observation deck overlooking the artificial pond.

History of Heron Haven Nature Center

It was established by a group of concerned citizens from the Heron Lake area who formed a committee to oversee the development of a nature center. The goal was to create an outdoor learning environment where children and adults could learn about wildlife, habitat management, and sustainable agriculture practices in the region.

The construction facility is unique in itself. Over miles of boardwalk were built throughout the pond, and planted trees on both sides. While walking through this trail, visitors can observe aquatic plants such as cattails and duckweed, as well as many species that depend upon them for food or shelter, including birds, frogs, dragonflies, and more.

In the early years of development, the center saw various animals, including deer, fox, coyote, raccoon, and skunks. However, as time passed and the pond’s area matured, many of these animals moved on. Today, the center is home to a wide variety of local and migratory birds and turtles, frogs, and snakes.
