How to Tell If Your Pain May Be Coming From a Disc (Omaha Chiropractor)

Could Your Neck Pain, Sciatica, or Numbness Be a Disc Issue?

One of the most common questions we hear at Life Source Chiropractic is:

“How do I know if I have a bulging disc or herniated disc?”

The truth is, the only way to actually see a bulging or herniated disc is with advanced imaging like an MRI. But during a detailed evaluation, your body can give us many important clues that a spinal disc may be involved.

The type of pain, where the pain travels, and even the way your body moves can often point us in the right direction.

How To Tell If Your Pain Is From A Bulging Disc

What Is a Disc Issue?

Spinal discs act like cushions between the bones of your spine. Over time, discs can begin to break down from stress, posture problems, injuries, repetitive movements, or degeneration.

Common disc problems include:

  • Disc degeneration
  • Bulging discs
  • Herniated discs
  • Annular tears
  • Spinal stenosis involving the disc and nerve openings

When these disc problems irritate or compress nearby nerves, symptoms can begin to travel into the arms or legs.

One of the Biggest Clues: Pain That Travels

One of the strongest signs a disc may be involved is when pain radiates away from the spine.

Neck Disc Problems and Arm Pain

In the neck, irritated nerves can cause symptoms into very specific parts of the arm and hand.

For example:

  • Pain or numbness into the thumb and pointer finger can suggest irritation involving the C6 nerve and commonly the C5-C6 disc level
  • Symptoms into the middle finger may point toward the C7 nerve
  • Pain into the ring finger or pinky finger can indicate irritation lower in the neck near C8

People may also experience:

  • Burning pain
  • Tingling
  • Weakness
  • Grip strength changes
  • Pain traveling into the shoulder blade or arm

Low Back Disc Problems and Sciatica

The same thing can happen in the lower back.

When a lumbar disc irritates a nerve, pain may travel into the hip, glute, leg, calf, or foot.

Common patterns include:

  • Pain into the front of the thigh may involve upper lumbar nerves
  • Pain traveling down the outside of the leg into the top of the foot or big toe often points toward the L5 nerve
  • Pain shooting down the back of the leg into the calf or foot may involve the S1 nerve and the L5-S1 disc

This is commonly referred to as sciatica when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated.

Other Signs a Disc May Be Involved

During an evaluation, we also look for other important clues such as:

  • Severe back or neck pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain when coughing or sneezing
  • Difficulty standing upright
  • Pain when sitting
  • An antalgic lean (the body shifting to one side because of irritation)
  • Changes in reflexes or movement patterns

These findings help us determine whether the pain may be muscular, joint-related, nerve-related, or disc-related.

Why Early Evaluation Matters

Disc problems do not always improve on their own. In many cases, the irritation can continue to worsen over time if the underlying problem is not addressed.

The earlier we identify the source of the irritation, the sooner we can determine the best treatment approach.

At Life Source Chiropractic in Omaha, our evaluations focus on identifying movement patterns, nerve involvement, disc-related symptoms, and mechanical stress on the spine to help determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Our proprietary Paragon Method combines:

The goal is to help patients reduce irritation, improve movement, and get back to doing the things they value most.

When Should You Get Checked?

If you are experiencing:

…it may be time to get evaluated.
